Seasonal Lawn Care Guide
At Affordable Aeration, we tailor all of our services — aeration, overseeding, and fertilization — to your lawn’s unique growth cycle. Whether you have a warm-season or cool-season lawn, the timing of these services plays a critical role in getting the best results.
Warm-Season Lawn Care
(Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, St. Augustine)
Warm-season grasses thrive in hot weather and grow best from late spring through summer. Our strategy focuses on aerating during peak growth, fertilizing early and mid-season, and overseeding only once at the start of the growing season.
Spring through Early Summer (March–June)
✅ Aeration – Loosens soil early to jumpstart growth.
✅ Fertilization – Apply a balanced fertilizer as the lawn greens up.
✅ Overseeding (if needed) – This is the only window for overseeding warm-season lawns. Helps thicken turf as the growing season begins.
Mid to Late Summer (July–August)
✅ Aeration – Highly beneficial during peak growth. Grass recovers quickly and thickens as roots take full advantage of loosened soil and increased airflow.
✅ Fertilization – Whether it’s your first or second application, summer feeding supports thick, healthy turf and improves drought resilience.
🚫 Overseeding – Not recommended. Spring is the only effective time for warm-season seed.
Early Fall (September)
✅ Aeration (Optional) – Recommended only if you missed spring or summer aeration. Helps meet the 2-aerations-per-year goal and relieve compaction before dormancy.
🚫 Fertilization – Grass growth is slowing. Late-season feeding can stress the lawn.
🚫 Overseeding – Too late in the season for seed to establish properly.
Late Fall through Winter (October–February)
🛑 Rest Period – No services are recommended.
Warm-season lawns enter dormancy earlier in the fall. Use this time to plan your spring services and get on the schedule early for the best results.
Cool-Season Lawn Care
(Tall Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass)
Cool-season grasses thrive in spring and fall. Our program prioritizes aeration and fertilization during both of those seasons, with overseeding reserved exclusively for fall, when conditions are ideal for germination.
Spring (March–May)
✅ Aeration – Helps relieve winter compaction and encourages strong spring root growth.
✅ Fertilization – Apply a balanced fertilizer to support early-season growth and green-up.
🚫 Overseeding – Not recommended. Wait until fall for the best results.
Mid to Late Summer (June–August)
🚫 Aeration – Avoid aerating during periods of heat stress. Grass growth slows during summer dormancy.
🚫 Fertilization – Feeding in summer can lead to stress and increase the risk of disease.
🚫 Overseeding – Summer conditions are too harsh for proper seed establishment.
Early to Mid Fall (September–October)
✅ Aeration – This is the most important time for cool-season aeration. Fall growth allows for excellent recovery and thickening.
✅ Overseeding – This is the only recommended window for overseeding cool-season lawns. Cooler temperatures and moist soil promote strong germination.
✅ Fertilization – Apply a balanced fertilizer to fuel new seed growth and strengthen the lawn for winter.
Winter (November–February)
🛑 Rest Period – No services are recommended.
Cool-season grasses go dormant or slow down significantly in winter. Use this time to plan ahead and schedule spring aeration and fertilization.
